City council endorses moves to designate historically significant buildings in Timmins

Timmins city council is unanimously behind the work of its municipal heritage committee, to establish bylaws and other measures to preserve historically significant landmarks.

During a presentation at Tuesday night’s meeting, committee chair Nicola Alexander and museum curator Karen Bachmann showed photos of several of those buildings.

Mayor George Pirie  endorsed protecting them, pointing out some have already been lost.

“I’m firmly behind any tool that we could possibly have in our tool chest to save buildings like the Timmins Daily Press building, or the old Bupont’s building on the mine manager’s house,” he stated.

The Daily Press building was an art deco structure on the southwest corner of Cedar Street and Second Avenue.  Bupont’s was a car dealership at the bottom of Third Avenue, and the mine manager’s house the mayor mentioned was on the Dome Mine property.

“I want to have if at all possible a say,” the mayor continued, “because we can be that place of inspiration and we have to do a better job of not only acknowledging our past, but teaching it and educating ourselves.”

COUNCIL BRIEFS

  • Council approved spending $84,480.00 plus HST for modifications to the family washroom at the airport, in order to be accessible for people with mobility issues.
  • Also approved was $9,600 for four decorative benches next to the splash pad at Hollinger Park. Not only will they allow parents and caregivers to sit while watching their kids play in the water, they’re meant to act as barriers to prevent those kids from running out onto Algonquin Boulevard.
