100 years of the Timmins Public Library: Big party planned for July 10th

The Timmins Public Library is celebrating one-hundred years of service in 2024.  The big party is planned for Wednesday, July 10th in Hollinger Park.

Assistant library director Amy Knifton (NIFF-tun) says that among other things,  it will feature activities for kids and information for adults.

“And a live stage where we’re attempting to have live performers from our local community that would represent the different areas of our community, such as an Indigenous performer, a Francophone performer, as well as an English performer,” Knifton elaborates.

The library will be looking for performers next month.  If you’re interested, you can contact Shannon Carnahan at the main branch.

If you haven’t been at the library in several years, you’re in for a surprise.

Knifton says it’s about much more than lending books and putting on children’s programming.

“Our library today is about creating community connections and being a space that is free for all to enjoy” she explains, “as well as enriching their lives, whether that’s information, entertainment or even wellness.”

Among the ways the library does that is with up to date information and other supports like technology and expertise.

One more thing that has changed: The lady who would shush you and point at the door, threatening to throw you out, is no longer at the library.
