Christmas season in Timmins kicking off with annual parade

The Timmins Santa Claus Parade is set for this coming Saturday beginning at 6 p.m.

Timmins BIA executive director Jessica Mayer says the event will be bigger than previous years. “We have about 60 floats this year and there will be lots of Christmas lights this year which is sure to brighten up the parade.”

She adds when she was a child the parade was held during the day but was changed to an evening event a number of years ago. “It gives you more of that Christmas and nostalgic feel with all the lights along with the music. It just shines brighter.”

People who watch the parade will have an opportunity to donate both non-perishable food items to the South Porcupine Food Bank and new socks for Socks Timmins. “The parade and Christmas are all about supporting family and community and this is one of the best and easiest ways to show support,” said Mayer.

The event is organized by a combination of the BIA along with a committee of volunteers. Mayer says their help is very much appreciated. “We have helpers from the college, all the police foundation, firefighter, and paramedic students. They volunteer their time to keep the roads safe during the parade.”
