The member of Queen’s Park for Mushkegowuk James Bay is once again pushing for safer highways.
Guy Bourgouin is developing a new private member’s bill that would make it illegal to pass on a solid double line on highways similar to other provinces across Canada. He says right now it’s only a suggestion in Ontario and that needs to change.
“And if you do pass and get caught it will be a 400 dollar fine and you can lose up to three demerit points,” he said. “This is to avoid situations that we’ve been seeing on our highways and too many peoples lives are at stake.”
He says he’s had some positive meetings with the OPP regarding this legislation.
“He said that something as simple as a private member’s bill like this one would help with safety,” he said. “Right now they can charge you but under like carless driving. But the two lines are not a law in Ontario, it’s a suggestion.”
Bourgouin says he was approached by a Kapuskasing area resident who got into a serious accident because the driver behind him passed on a solid double line. He plans to present the bill when the legislature resume sitting November 21st
