A couple of setbacks are delaying the reopening of the swimming pool at the Archie Dillon Sportsplex.
The city’s manager of parks, rec and building operations Glenn Thurston says there’ve been problems removing tiles on the pool deck for replacement. On top of that, there are issues with replacing the roof.
“We’ve had water seepage through that you couldn’t tell until we took off the old shingles,” he says, “and then we found out that the wood was rotted on the cross beams and the decking.”
An engineering assessment has suggested how to move along quickly.
So the question is whether Thurston knows when people will be able to splash and swim in the pool.
“Well, not exactly,” he admits, “but I’m thinking we’re probably going to be the end of September.”
The pool part of the Sportsplex was built in 1978. This will be its third roof.
