Transfer station recommended for closure

The days of dropping off your garbage and recycling at the Tisdale transfer station appear to be numbered.

Public works and engineering director Pat Seguin is recommending to city council that it be closed.  He says the east end already has curbside pick-up service, so the transfer station is a duplication.

Most councillors at Tuesday night’s meeting agree with him.

Councillor Noella Rinaldo commented that whoever uses it only has to drive a bit further to the landfill site on Pine Street South.

“Just keep on driving another five minutes or on your way to Timmins to do your groceries or wherever you’re going, just keep on going down,” she said, “just drop it off there, it’s an extra ten minutes.  It’s time.  Time to take the band-aid off.”

Mayor George Pirie spoke in favour of keeping the transfer site open, but only in the summer.  He says that will keep bears out of the populated area looking for garbage.

Mayor George Pirie wants the transfer station to operate in the summer only, to keep bears out of built-up areas.
