Students celebrate Franco Ontario Day

A few speeches,  some singing,  some dancing, and a lot of cheering.  That’s what about 700 students experienced today in Timmins, on Franco-Ontario Day.

The celebration in the Charles Fournier Auditorium brought together students from francophone and French immersion schools right across Timmins.

Grade 7 Ecole Renaissance student May Donaldson says being francophone means you can get to know a lot more people than if you’re unilingual.  She adds that in the long term, “There’s a lot of different jobs you could get that you need to speak French.”

Le drapeau Franco-Ontarien — the Franco-Ontario flag — made its way through the auditorium.

Not to lose the cultural aspect of the day, May sums up in nine words why it’s important to celebrate francophone culture and the Franco Ontario flag.

“We have to be proud of who we are.”
