Labour Day means labouring at fall fair set-up for Porcupine District Agricultural Society

What are holidays to us mean little to anyone working in agriculture.   To members of the Porcupine District Agricultural Society, Labour Day means starting the work of setting up for the Timmins Fall Fair the following weekend at the Mountjoy Arena.

It runs this Saturday and Sunday… and as president Rock Whissell notes, those two days are like New Year’s Eve and New Year’s Day to everyone else.

“Throughout the summer, all of the farmers and the producers have worked hard in their fields and this is the celebration at the end of the summer,” Whissell explains.

The big attractions this year are the heavy horse pull sponsored by Moose FM;  the dock dogs shows; country artist Manny Blu playing Saturday night; and a focus inside the arena on educating non-farm kids about animals and how a farm operates.

“We don’t have any live music or anything in the arena,” says Whissell.  “We’re having more kids’ games, kids’ activities, we’re promoting and educating more the kids  throughout the weekend of the fair this year.”
