Police, anti-impaired driving campaigns concerned about increase in charges

Timmins Police are seeing a marked increase the past couple of weeks in the number of impaired driving related charges that they’re laying.

“This is a trend that is obviously distressing.” –Marc Depatie, Timmins Police Service

Communications coordinator Marc Depatie says the service is constantly working on public education with MADD and the Arrive Alive program about the dangers.

“We work alongside them to get the message out to every driver that impaired driving – be it with alcohol or any other substance – is a criminal act,” he notes.

Depatie says if you’ve been drinking or using any other recreational drug, rolling the dice and driving is just not worth it.

“The odds of making it home safely is not in your favour in terms of an unnecessary brush with the law and in more severe cases, a collision leading to loss of life, (and/or) severe injury. It’s a life-altering set of circumstances that no one should be taking lightly.”

Charges are not under the Highway Traffic Act.  They’re Criminal Code charges, meaning a permanent criminal record if you’re convicted.
