All is well for farmers market in its new location

The new location for the Mountjoy Farmers Market is already paying off, only a month after opening there.

Market chairman Garnet Wilcox says the average number of vendors last year was 16 or 17.  This year, it’s more than 20.

“Vendors are noticing that there’s more traffic,” he tells My Timmins Now Dot Com.  “There’s more awareness.  We’ve had media coverage.  We’ve had donations, so that’s brought out the public interest in the market as well.”

And as the days get shorter and the nights a little cooler, the selection at the market is changing week to week, too.

“We already went through strawberry season for the most part, so we don’t have anymore of those,” Wilcox reports, “but we do have things like onions, lettuce, kale, collared greens, micro greens.”

A vendor from Smooth Rock Falls also brings in produce from down south.  So Wilcox says there are potatoes, corn, peas and green beans.

That new market location is on Riverside Drive, just west of the bridge.  It  runs from 9:00am until 1:00pm every Saturday until Thanksgiving.
