VALVE FAILURE AT DOME RESULTS IN TAILINGS OUTSIDE POND

UPDATE:  This version of the story contains corrections in terminology.

Goldcorp is reporting an environmental incident involving tailings at its Dome Mine property in South Porcupine.

In a release, the company says that just before 8:00am Saturday, a drain valve failed on its No. 6 tailings line, on the southern area of the property.  That released tailings material and process water outside of the pond.

No one was hurt.  The spill has been contained and the company says there is no risk to downstream water users, including users of Porcupine Lake.

Goldcorp says process operations have been suspended, and the company is collaborating with government officials on the next steps, while it focuses on mitigating the environmental impact.
