Outdoor rinks operated by the City of Timmins – four of them – were open, but last week’s mild, wet weather put the kibosh on them, at least temporarily.
Parks and recreation manager Glenn Thurston says a lot of cold weather is needed, to make the ice safe and enjoyable.
He says there was also a plan in which the city and another group were going to put a rink in at Hollinger Park.
“Unfortunately with the weather,” Thurston says,” we didn’t have enough time to get it going. What we’re going to do is we will be having next year a fantastic skating path or oval going through there.”
Despite the uncooperative weather, Thurston notes that are still opportunities to skate indoors during the holidays.
“Tim Hortons has once again generously donated free skate times at all the (city-owned) arenas,” he notes, “and you can get the times at timmins.ca if you click on the Tim Hortons Public Skate.”
