New specialized unit for people with dementia and other needs

A new Behavioural Specialized Unit in Timmins will allow local long-term care residents to get the care they need closer to home.

That’s according to the Ontario government, which is investing $312,800 to create the new Behavioural Specialized Unit (BSU) at the Golden Manor. The specialized beds are part of Ontario’s Your Health Plan to connect individuals with complex care needs like dementia to care in the comfort of a home instead of a hospital.

Golen Manor Executive Director Lia Fontana says the new unit is a win for residents and their families. “Right now, anyone who needs specialized behaviour support has to go to Sudbury, which is close to four hours away, or Thunder Bay which is eight hours away. Care close to home is one of the benefits. But the major benefit is that they are going to be cared for by staff who will be highly trained specifically in dementia-related responsive behaviours.” She adds residents will have individualized care plans and a very consistent approach with the staff in the unit.

Officials say the eight beds aren’t in addition to the current 177 but rather they will repurpose existing long-term care beds. Some of the funding going towards staffing the unit which will see a ratio of four residents for every personal support worker and eight residents for one registered practical nurse. Training and equipment purchases make up the rest of the money. Fontana says the home is hoping to have the unit operational by the middle of February.

“The seniors in our community have spent their lives taking care of us, now it is our time to take care of them,” said George Pirie, MPP of Timmins. “That is why our government is investing over $300,000 (in the unit) that includes eight beds right here in Timmins. This investment will provide specialized life-changing services for our seniors who are dealing with complex cognitive conditions like dementia and ensure they receive the care they need and deserve.”
