Runway improvements coming to Vic Power Airport

Improvements are coming to the Vic Power Airport. Timmins City Council approved an additional expenditure for the $10.5 million project that will help increase the thickness of the runways. Airport manager Dave Dayment says the work will help them when the big planes come in.

“To operate the bigger aircraft on a more consistent basis,” he said. “We did get some diversions from WestJet last winter. We recently had some 737’s charters picking up some forest firefighters and taking them to Quebec. That’s six take offs and landings  in the last two weeks. ”

Dayment says work will start in early August.

“We are going to pave two runways alpha and bravo this year,” he said. “The middle runway 0321 which is our longer one will take two months to do, so it looks like August and September. We don’t like to go any longer into October with paving due to temperatures.”

Dayment adds that one of the runways will have to wait until next June to get completed.
