Fire damages townhouse units

With files from Shane Button

A late morning fire has damaged four or five units in a townhouse complex in the south end of Timmins.

Fire Chief Tom Laughren says the blaze at Sterling Avenue and Birch Street began in one unit, quickly reaching the attic, and spreading to other units along roof trusses.

On the scene, the fire chief said it was too early to determine a cause.

“They’ll do an investigation once we have it out and contained and there’ll be follow-up from there,” Laughren told My Timmins Now Dot Com.

We’ll also have to wait for a damage estimate.

“Too early to tell,” the chief confirms. “There’s considerable damage, both fire and water.”

With the help of police, the complex was safely evacuated.  One person was treated by paramedics for smoke inhalation.
