Drivers charged for disobeying Norman St. closure

Due to the rising Mattagami River, Norman St. is closed south of Cedar Meadows and north of the bridge – but that hasn’t stopped people from trying to drive on the street.

City Police say they’ve charged five drivers for their escapades… going around barricades.

A 62-year-old woman’s car got stuck in the ditch.  Another driver got stuck and had his vehicle removed by a private towing service.

All five have been charged with driving on a closed highway.  The penalty is a fine and demerit points.

Police say the closure is meant to preserve public safety.
