Flood warning for Gogama extended

The flood warning for Gogama and Minisinakwa Lake has been extended by a week… to next Friday, May 17th.

My Timmins Now Dot Com asked natural resources ministry technical specialist Derek Farrer why.

“Water levels are still fluctuating because of the recent precipitation that we received as well as the snowpack that’s still in the forest,” he replied. “So we just want to make residents aware that the conditions are still changing, potentially.”

Then there are the expected daytime temperatures in the mid- to high teens over the next week.

“That will increase the rate of melt for the snowpack,” Farrer explains.  “So that’s where we’re expecting to see more runoff enter into the rivers and the water systems, and that’s why we have the bulletin, the flood watch in effect, because we will assume that water levels will slowly rise because of this melting factor.”

Minisinakwa Lake surrounds Gogama on three sides.
