BIA 2024 priorities include gift cards instead of gift certificates

The Downtown Timmins BIA is going back a few years, as it sets its priorities for 2024.

Executive director Cory Robin say it’s reexamining the strategic plan that was devised in 2021,to use many good ideas that are still relevant.

Part of that is more communications with members; as well as with the community in general, telling people know what the BIA is and what it does.

And Robin says it’s retiring paper gift certificates, moving to the digital realm with plastic cards.

“So you’ll be able to buy cards online or here at the office that’ll be used for any business that signs up,” he elaborates. “It’s very simple (for the business). If you have a Visa machine and you take Visa, you’ll be able to take this card.”

The business group also wants the diamonds on downtown streets revitalized, and will work with the city to replace the old snowflake Christmas decorations on light poles.

“We’re trying to replace them with new LED ones. They’d be about the same size,” notes Robin. “And over the years, our stock of snowflakes went from the required 70 to around 36, just because they become old and unusable.”

There are 230 businesses in the Business Improvement Area.
