‘Hammering away’ begins on overpass

You’ve probably seen equipment doing preliminary work on the overpass at Algonquin Blvd. and Spruce St., getting ready to demolish it.

In the words of manager of engineering for the city, Scott Collin, the contractor has begun “hammering away”.

“Within the next 20 days or three weeks,” he says, “they’ll have the overpass removed and cleaned up and mobilized offsite.”

Don’t expect any explosions. Collin says rubber blast mats onsite will protect infrastructure under the roadway… when concrete chunks start falling onto it.

“It’s going to be just jackhammered away. They have a large pecking bit on their excavator, and they’ll just be hammering away at the concrete until it breaks off and crumbles into pieces.”

Audio of our interview with Scott Collin is posted below.
