Makerspace intended for teens, young adults

A makerspace is coming to the main branch of the Timmins Public Library later this year.

Adult services librarian Shannon Carnahan says it’s intended for older teens and young adults… to use state-of-the-art equipment to further their hobbies or develop their skills to be innovative entrepreneurs.

All you need is a library card and be willing to complete orientation sessions.

“Where we have a librarian who’s going to go in and explain to you how to properly use the equipment in there,” Carnahan elaborates, “without damaging it or yourself, in case like using the sewing machine or like the cutting machine.”

Renovations are underway and equipment is being acquired. Assistant library director Amy Knifton says it will be a few months before the makerspace opens.

“We are hoping to do the main launch August, late summer,” she projects. “That is if everything else goes to plan throughout the summer.”

The audio link below will tell you what to expect and how to suggest what you would like available in the makerspace.
