Clean-up earlier, less expensive this year

Spring clean-up moves back to the actual spring this year in Timmins. And instead of being done internally by public works employees, it’s been contracted to Green for Life for about $15,000 less than last year’s $155,000.

Last year, contract problems forced the city to do it internally, using public works employees. Now, the company “Green for Life” has been contracted for two years, with an option for a third year.

From May 6th to 17th, GFL will be doing curbside pick-up of items that are not divertible from the city landfill.

Public works and environmental services director Ken Krcel says that includes furniture: mattresses and box springs – if they’re wrapped in plastic; and things like hoses and kids’ swimming pools.

“What’s not accepted is anything that can be diverted,” he continues. “So recyclable materials, steel, which can all be brought to recycling facilities, any white goods. There’s a complete list that goes out. The list has been consistent since we offered the program.”

The list is available on the city’s website.

The only change this year is when it will be picked up.

“Starting the first two weeks of May, ending just before the long weekend,” Krcel explains, “where in the past we started after the long weekend, so this kind of lets everybody clean up, then take off for the weekend and enjoy the holiday.”
