Northern mayors concerned about what lack of snow could mean for upcoming summer

The lack of snowfall in our region this winter already has some mayors in the north concerned about what this could be mean for the upcoming summer.

Kapuskasing Mayor Dave Plourde says he spoke with Chapleau Mayor Ryan Bignucolo about the importance of the province being ready incase their concerns are correct. He adds that last summer Chapleau municipal officials felt the province didn’t offer the protect necessary.

“To make sure Kapuskasing and other communities along the Highway 11 as well as all across Ontario ready for the season coming because already it’s looking like it will be a dry summer and if that does occur we’re gonna have to be ahead of the curve and not behind,” he said.

Despite some dry conditions early on, last summer proved to be a quiet forest fire season for the Natural Resources and Forestry Ministry with few fires reported than in 2022.
