Timmins group looks to public to help with cultural diversity

The Ukranian Cultural Group has just one month left to raise money for the symbolic statue for their park.

President of the Ukranian Cultural Group of Timmins, Helen Yaschychyn says it’s of Taras Shevchenko a symbolic man who is to Ukranians as William Shakespeare is to the English.

The statue is $17,000 but they still have $5000 to raise to commission the sculptor on time. The whole project is $25,000 however the majority of funds are going towards the statue since it is of the greatest significance according to Yaschychyn.

Yaschychyn hopes to bring the cultural awareness back to the city with this park because currently she says it’s being used as a hang out to drink.

The park was initially created to give trbute to Ukranian pioneers that came to Timmins to work in the gold mines.

The park is located at Mountjoy and Second Avenue.

To make a donation cheques can be made out to “Ukranian Cultural Group of Timmins” and dropped off or mailed to the Timmins Museum.
