UPDATED: Fire at Harvey’s-Swiss Chalet

It took firefighters about an hour Wednesday night to put out a fire that began on the roof at Harvey’s-Swiss Chalet at Algonquin Blvd. and Hwy. 655.

Deputy Fire Chief Scott Atkinson says the call went in at around 8:00pm.  By 9:00, the operation switched to mopping up and dousing hot spots.

Repairs were .being done to the roof, so there was a propane tank up there.

“When they’re doing the roofing they have to heat up with torches to put the roofing on,” Atkinson tells My Timmins Now Dot Com, “so I’m not saying that was the cause, but there’s definitely an issue there we’re going to have to look at and investigate.”

The interior sustained severe smoke damage.

“So I’m going to suspect the restaurant will probably be closed for some time until they get that cleaned up and there was water that had come through and into the restaurant, too.”

Atkinson says the water got in when firefighters punched holes in the roof to keep flames from extending further.

Firefighters pouring water onto the roof, the origin of the flames.
