Timmins Chamber fighting a mining tax hike

The Timmins Chamber is fighting an increase on mining taxes. The tax hike has been pitched by multiple groups, but President Al Thorne has rallied businesses from across the province to stand against it. They have taken it as far as having the Ontario Chamber back the cause. That means the 60, 000 businesses the Chamber represents will support the initiative, to maintain the current rates.

Various lobby groups say that raising taxes on the non-renewable resource will help solve the province’s financial instability. Thorne says the industry plays a crucial role in our provincial economy. He says He says we shouldn’t be adding to the burden of doing business in Ontario, and we need to find ways to support the industry’s success.

Thorne spoke with the Ontario Chamber at their Annual General Meeting on May 2nd. Over 100 delegates were at the conference, to debate policies pitched by Chambers across the province. They are doing so to determine the OCC’s top priorities for the coming year.

The OCC will now use its policy as part of its efforts to lobby the provincial government to guard against increasing industry tax hikes.
