Annual FONOM Conference Kicks Off Today

Northern politicians will be meeting up in Sudbury today for the annual FONOM conference. Mayors and councillors from the Federation of Northern Ontario Municipalities will meet with cabinet ministers in the three day conference. President of FONOM, Al Spacek says the AGM will discuss issues that affect the north.

“Some of the presentations that are going on are municipal asset management courses. Of course there will be a session on the future of hospitals in North Eastern Ontario,” says Spacek. “There will also be a session on the provincial land tax review, which is of interest to people where there’s un-organized township.”

“The other highlight is always the Minister’s question forum. Where, this year I believe we have nine ministers that are going to be attending. So it’s a good opportunity for people to question the minister, and also hear what is front and centre on their agenda.”

Included in the Ministers attending is Michael Gravelle, the Minister of Northern Development and Mines. Ted McMeekin will also be there, who is the Minster of Municipal Affairs.

Timmins Mayor Steve Black will also be at the Annual General Meeting.
