High number of bear calls to TPS this month

Bears are apparently getting tired of waiting for the berries to come out, and are coming into Timmins to find food.

Timmins Police communications coordinator Marc Depatie says there were ten calls to police on Monday, and 50 since June 1st. By the time officers arrived on the scene of 40 of them, the animals were gone.

“And the bear calls seem to be of a nature where the bears are not just at the tree line,” he observes.  “They seem to be making further encroachment into the built-up area of the city.”

“There was one bear call on the Gillies Lake nature trail, another around the Patricia Ave. area, also Mountjoy had a series of garbage cans knocked over on McBride.”

That bear at Gillies yesterday (Monday) was tranquilized and removed by MNRF technicians.
