Mayor’s Health Table – Wed., April 15

Every day at noon for the duration of the COVID-19 emergency, a group led by Mayor George Pirie called the Timmins Health Table will issue an update.  Here are details from today’s update.

MAYOR SAYS NO DETAILS WORKED OUT FOR CURFEW

Mayor George Pirie has provided more details on the possibility of a curfew during the COVID-19 pandemic.  Basically, there are no details such as start and end times every night.

At his health table conference call today, he said it’s only about stemming the spread of the coronavirus… not about reducing crime or keeping carloads of teenagers from driving around town at night.

Pirie says his poll of councillors at their Tuesday night meeting was part of testing the public’s view on a curfew.

“It’s just something that we want to keep in touch with within the community, to see what their feeling is,” Pirie explained.  “As I say right now, from a police point of view, it hasn’t been something that they would recommend putting in place.”

However, if the mayor eventually does impose a curfew, it would be up to city police to enforce it.

Pirie first floated the curfew idea when he implemented a state of emergency back on April 3rd.

WHO YOU CAN’T SELF-ISOLATE WITH

Stricter rules on Canadians returning from international travel include one specifying who they can’t self-isolate with.

Porcupine Health Unit chief nursing officer Chantal Riopel says whether a traveller has symptoms or not, they can’t quarantine with anyone over 65 years old or with another medical condition.

“These individuals are at higher risk for severe illness and we need to protect them as much as possible,” she told the mayor’s health table conference.  “So starting today, individuals will not be able to self-isolate with these individuals.”

The new regulations were announced on Tuesday by Prime Minister Justin Trudeau.

Here is the raw audio of today’s call.
