UPDATE: Food banks still vital during pandemic

Update: Further restriction on clients inside building.  From a news release: “In terms of the new normal ‘social distancing’, we are only allowing two (2) clients into
the food bank at a given time, as well as advising those who are ill to stay home andnot enter the food bank.
Clients who are ill can send a healthy trusted individual with your household identification for your food pick up and delivery.”

During the coronavirus pandemic, food banks still have to feed the poor in our communities.

South Porcupine Food Bank treasurer Peter Davis says the only real change to its operation is that it’s limiting the number of clients inside the Main Street facility to four at a time.

He says the food bank’s stock is still in good shape, but it is low on a few items.

“Such as baby wipes, ravioli, alphaghetti. mac and cheese, ham flakes, granola bars, cereals and canned stew,” Davis rhymes off.  “But also we take of course monetary donations to purchase our perishable items such as milk, bread, margarine, frozen meats and fresh fruits and veggies.”

Monetary donations are always welcome, to help the volunteer board buy perishable items like dairy and meat products.

“If people have means and they can help us out, that would be wonderful with financial donations,” Davis remarks “Then we can put the money towards where we are short.  Same with non-perishable items.  We make large purchases of those as well as we get low.”

You don’t have to leave self-isolation to donate money.  You can do it online through the food bank’s web site.  And you’ll get a tax receipt.
