Don’t rely on GPS, learn map and compass skills

The C.M. Shields branch of the Timmins Public Library doesn’t want you to get lost.  So it’s holding a map and compass workshop, this Saturday morning at ten.

Volunteers from Timmins-Porcupine Search and Rescue will be doing the teacher.  Vice-president James Vieno says the map and compass method is failsafe in the wilderness.

“GPS’s batteries die, sometimes they get unconfigured, updates sometimes are not done and you’ll only find that out when there’s a situation with it,” he points out.

Vieno says the workshop is for anyone, from people who have never touched a compass, to those with advanced skill.

“We’ve got compasses that people can try to see if they get the knack of it and we’re going to have maps there and we’re going to go through the whole thing.”

It starts at 10:00am Saturday.  You can register by calling the library at 705-235-2623 ext. 8590..
