Police crack down on speeding in South Porcupine

A number of public complaints about speeding led to Timmins Police stepping up enforcement one day last week… in a perennial hot spot.

Communications coordinator Marc Depatie says it’s the eastbound entrance to South Porcupine, near the Beer Store.

“That’s a key intersection where a number of students cross to go to Roland Michener High School,” he points out. “There are also seniors that live in the area that use that intersection for crossing, as well as the one at Moore.”

The one-day blitz led to ten tickets for speeding between 25 and 28 kilometres an hour over the limit of 50; one charge each of operating a vehicle while using a cell phone and having an expired insurance card; and two for expired licence plate stickers.

Depatie adds that obeying the limit is a shared responsibility between the driver and police.

“You should not expect any form of leniency in areas that have been identified as areas of concern by the general public.  If it’s a cause for concern for the general public, it’s a cause for concern for your local police service.”
