History afternoon a step towards a local history group

The administrators of the Timmins Then and Now Facebook group are trying to get an in-person local history group off the ground.

So they’re the featured speakers at the Timmins Public Library’s local history afternoon.

Reference librarian Karina Douglas-Takayesu says it’s on Saturday, March 14th, starting at 2:00pm.

“Diane Armstrong is also going to be one of the featured speakers,” she notes. “ She has her Over the Hill 4 book, which is based on her columns in the Timmins Times.  And she’s actually going to be in a little bit earlier as well.  So she’ll start at 1:30 and she’s be selling the books and signing them.”

Douglas-Takayesu says the event would be especially interesting to newcomers to the city.

“It’s a great opportunity to learn abou the community’s history and what we have, even right here at the library, as well as now that the permanent exhibit is on dext door, some people will want to go and have a look, too at the museum.”

Last year’s history afternoon was so successful, it’s being moved this year from the Tembec Room to the main library area.
