Snowmobilers, ice fishers can coexist peacefully, safely: Timmins Police Service

Now that most northern waterways have frozen over, there’s a lot of activity on them.

Timmins Police communications coordinator Marc Depatie is advocating safety in the relationship between snowmobilers and ice fishers and their huts.

“We strongly urge the use of reflective material on the ice huts so that snowmobilers travelling at night will be able to recognize that there’s a structure in their path,” he advises. “We also recommend that those persons who engage in ice fishing be particularly careful with cleaning up after themselves, removing all potential hazards from the path of a snowmobiler who may not be aware of the presence of an ice hut.”

Depatie also reminds snowmobilers of extra caution they should take and equipment they should use when travelling over ice.
