Is wrapping paper recyclable?

Let’s talk about all the garbage and recycling that Christmas generates.

First of all, the city’s environmental coordinator, Christina Beaton, says there’s a change in the collection schedule for the holidays.

“The collection that falls on Christmas Day or New Year’s Day will be collected on the following day,” she says. So if your collection day is normally Wednesday, it’s Thursday for the next two weeks.

And Beaton clears up the confusion about wrapping paper.  It doesn’t go in the recycle bin.

“The issue with it is they often contain not just paper, but there’s varieties like shiny wrapping paper, laminated, metallic, ones with glitter and textures and that’s what makes them not recyclable.”

By next weekend, you might be ready to get rid of your natural Christmas tree.

The city will have drop-off sites set up right across town, mostly at arenas, from December 27th to January 12th.

Beaton says the list will be on the Timmins Recyclepedia app.

“Decorations, we encourage you to reuse them,” she adds, “drop them off at local centres if they’re accepting that type of material and maybe do a swap with friends and try and get your Christmas trees to be revived.”
