Winter celebration of francophone culture set for Feb.18-29

When life gives you snow and cold, make a carnival out of it.

LaRonde is well on its way to planning its annual “carnaval” for February 18th to 29th.

Executive director Lisa Bertrand says the centerpiece of the celebration of francophone culture is Bonhomme Carnaval.

“We have a whole bunch of activities planned with the Bonhomme Carnaval being present in the community,” Bertrand outlines.  “We have him scheduled to do some yoga, to do some line dancing.  He’s going to go into the schools to visit the ice sculpture competitions.”

And this year, Bonhomme will visit the French-language schools in Iroquois Falls… which doesn’t have its own cultural centre.

Also among Bonhomme’s busy schedule will be judging the storefront window competition.  The theme is Bonhomme and what he means to the business.

“Last year we had a trophy and it was the Learning Centre that won,” Bertrand recalls. “So we’re hoping to see as many participants this year as was last year.”

At the end of Carnaval comes the unveiling of who really is inside the Bonhomme costume.
