On-street parking ban takes effect tonight

When the witching hour arrives tonight, so does the overnight parking ban on all the streets in Timmins..

City public works manager Ken Krcel says the bylaw is in place to help make his snow removal crews’ job more efficient.

“It’s important that when we have winter storms and when we get into snow removal, the people do their best not to park on the streets, because it impedes our operations,” he observes.

Krcel adds that the clearer the streets are of vehicles, the faster they can be plowed.

The same goes when crews work during the day, cutting down snowbanks and widening the streets.

“We ask that when we post streets not to park, the people do their best to avoid that,” Krcel adds.  “If the cars are not there, we can quickly get through those streets and get them cleaned up.  But when we have to work around cars or try to get them moved, it affects everybody.”

Workers have already been checking intersections and sidewalks for slippery spots.  Krcel says sand boxes will start being put out over the next couple of weeks.
