Child car seat clinic and blitz coming this week and next

The child seat in your mini-van isn’t doing much good, if it’s not properly installed.

You can look into that on Thursday between 12:00 and 4:00pm at the ambulance bay across from Hollinger Park.  The Porcupine Health Unit will be conducting its monthly car seat clinic.

Health nurse Chani Delorme says you’ll need to make an appointment by calling the health unit, although no appointment is needed for a blitz on Thursday, October 3rd, same place between 3:00 and 7:00pm

Delorme says nurses who are qualified car seat technicians look for a lot of different things.

“We want to make sure that the car seat is installed properly,” she outlines. “We are also cross-checking both the car seat manual as well as the vehicle manual to make sure there are no contraindications between the two for how the car seat is installed.”

If your child is with you, the nurses will also check for the correct fit.

Delorme says the most common problem is that the seat isn’t installed tightly enough.

“You would test by using your non-dominant hand. I’m right-handed.  I would use my left.  You’d grab the base of the seat and try to move it from side to side.  If the car seat moves more than one inch, then it is not secured tightly enough.”
