Dig in the daytime, repair underground pipe at night

Work planned for the middle of the summer along the Schumacher Highway is meant to prevent further pipe breaks like two that happened over the past six or seven months.

Public utilities manager Scott Tam says that between July 15th and 26th, city workers will dig between McIntyre Road and Highway 655 to replace metal joints in the line that carries sewage from Schumacher to the treatment plant in Timmins.

“Just so we don’t have to experience any major upsets in the perfect timing of the year, in the wintertime or any other time of the year,” he notes.

Tam says digging will be done during the day…

“Yeah, so we can prepare the job site, basically excavate down and get all the materials that are necessary…”

The actual work on the pipe joints will be at night, when there’s less sewage pumping through the line.

“When everything’s prepared, we can basically cut into the section, replace the section and basically minimize the impact and it’s more contained, the situation,” Tam adds.

Re-paving will start August 9th.
