DARE camp to reinforce values learned in elementary school

More than 100 high school students will spend the weekend at Camp for a chance to review what they learned in Grade 6 DARE class and “Keeping it Real” class in Grade 8.

Timmins Police DARE coordinator Constable Rick Lemeiux says in those classes, they learned values and strategies to stay out of trouble and be community leaders.

“After Grade 8, if we don’t have anything, then some students of course are going to lose what we taught the,” Lemieux believes. “ So by doing this and we involved the high school students, it keeps it fresh in their minds and hopefully they pick up some new tools from our guest speakers and from all the different things we’ll be doing at the camp.”

Participants will be encouraged to get involved in all the activities – bubble suit soccer is among them – and to speak up and be themselves.

“A lot of times,” Lemieux observes, “people get into negative things, be it drugs or whatever the case may be, because they try to change for other people.  So the whole thing is in the camp, you know what?, leaders are themselves, be yourself.”
