Little League keeping a wary eye on water levels

Like so many outdoor sports organizations, Timmins Little League baseball is at the mercy of the weather, and how quickly the fields dry.

President Pat Durepos says the league always aims to start play the week after May Run.  But the Mattagami River is getting close to the Little League diamond at Participark.

“If you pass by the bridge,” he observes, “ you’ll see how the water’s just creeping up and creeping up and creeping up, so we’re keeping our fingers crossed for that.”

Durepos says five- and six-year-olds start out with T-ball.  Parents participate in learning the fundamentals of the game.

“You know, hopefully take some of those skills and those little tips and go home and play ball with their kids,” Durepos says. “Go to the park, go in the back yard and then continue their developmental process.”

When the players hit 12 years old, they move to the junior and senior divisions.  Durepos says they were started last year, to bridge the gap to the men’s league.  Minimum age for it is 18.

Registration for Little League is still open at the league website.
