The Timmins Porcupine Minor Soccer Association is all ready to kick off its 2019 season. It’s just waiting for the fields – or “soccer pitches”, if you prefer – to be dry enough.
President Joe Brunet says the mixed league has 52 teams, composed of about 600 kids from age 2½ to 18.
“This year, we started up an 18-plus mixed league,” the president notes. “So any kids that don’t want to quite go into women’s or men’s and just want to come out and do a bit of scrimmaging and playing a nice little fun game, well there’s an opportunity to do that, too.”
Brunet prefaces his prediction about when play might get underway with a comment about “the lovely winter we had”.
“We typically start around May 27th,” he observes, “but again this is all dependent on our fields and right now, the fields are still pretty wet, so I’m hoping the end of May, but I think more realistically it’ll be the start of June.”
The ten-week season is made up of two games a week, only on weeknights between Monday and Thursday.
