MNRF keeping a wary eye on Minisinakwa Lake and Gogama for potential flooding

It’s time to be wary about water levels around Gogama, but too early to be fleeing.

That word is from natural resources ministry technician Derek Farrer, in relation to the flood watch advisory put into effect on Sunday.

Minisinakwa Lake surrounds Gogama on three sides, and the water level is rising.  Farrer says it’s being monitored almost hourly, and the ministry is working with Ontario Power Generation to control the flow from a dam upstream.

He’s also confident about the weather the next few days.

“It’s nice and cool in the morning and at night, so it’s slowing down the rate of melt. So that’s good,” Farrer comments.

Still, he’s advising the people of Gogama to monitor the water level, and watch and listen for updates from the ministry.

“As soon as we have new updates, we’ll be sending them out as well,” he tells My Timmins Now Dot Com, “but just being prepared and making sure that they’re prepared and making sure that they’re paying attention and if they know about individuals that do not know about the notice being sent out, let them know, make them aware as well.”

The flood watch is in effect until Friday, unless the situation makes it necessary to upgrade it to a warning.
