Homeless bed suspension now in effect

Last night (Sun., April 28) was the final night for a while that Living Space can offer a bed for the night to the homeless of Timmins.

A gap in provincial funding is forcing the temporary closure of the service.

Executive director Jason Sereda says he knows that people will still need emergency overnight housing. That’s one reason the drop-in service remains open between noon and four every day.

“During that time,” he explains, “we have different caseworkers attend from organizations like the Canadian Mental Health Association, South Cochrane Addictions, the Friendship Centre and those people are really tasked with connecting people to resources. So the hope is that we can get people into e3ither the Good Samaritan Inn or helps domestic violence shelters or treatment beds so that the disruption to service is really minimized.”

Sereda is hoping the red tape to reinstate funding is cut through quickly, so that Living Space can soon return to nighttime operation.
