Skiing season still on at Kamiskotia

Spring is here and we’ve lost part of the mountains of snow that accumulated over the winter, but that doesn’t mean skiing season is over.

Eric Philpow is the general manager at Kamiskotia, in the rural west end of Timmins – the largest snow resort in our region.

He says the slopes and the tube park are still in good shape.

“Luckily, with the bit of rain we got last week and the weather going up and down, we haven’t lost much,” he reports. “ We did have a big snow base to begin with, it just went from fluff to condensed snow.  So we still have full coverage all over the place, tube park’s still in full operation for us.”

Philpow’s not ready to declare the season over yet, either.

“We’ve got a big race coming up in a couple weeks from now.  Beyond that, we’re hoping to get into, you know, first, second weekend of April for sure.”

CROSS-COUNTRY SKIING

Meanwhile, cross-country skiers could have several more weeks of their favourite activity before having to hang up the equipment for the summer.

Porcupine Ski Runners board member Mike Kornell says the trails are fully open and in good condition.  Despite above-zero daytime temperatures… night-time lows below freezing have kept them in good shape.

“So certainly, the actual base is solid,” says Kornell.  “And we had a lot of snow this year, so I think that the actual snowpack should last well into April.”

It’s impossible to predict how much longer the season could last.

“A couple years back, it went into early May, which is longer than usual, certainly,” Kornell explains.  “So I think that I would expect that we should be skiing late into April, based on the actual amount of snowfall.”

All that snowfall so many of us griped about all winter is the major reason the trails are still in excellent shape, as the days get longer and daytime temperatures high, meaning you can dress more lightly.
