VIRUS CAUSES GASTRO OUTBREAK AT EXTENDICARE TIMMINS

As of late Monday afternoon, 29 of the 180 residents of Extendicare Timmins have been affected by a virus attacking their gastro-intestinal systems.

Administrator Kelly Roy says it developed over the weekend.

“We’re monitoring our residents very, very closely for any signs of the outbreak (so they) are identified as early as possible,” she says, “to ensure that we have quick recovery from the outbreak.”

Roy adds that hygiene protocol has been increased, targeting high-touch areas,  in an attempt to stop the spread.

Visitors are still allowed but are asked to take precautions when visiting affected residents.

“We’re recommending it because we haven’t identified the causative agent right at this time,” Roy explains, “ so until we know exactly what virus is lurking, we’re advising people to use precautions by using safety products such as masks, gowns, gloves as necessary when visiting.”

…That’s to prevent the spread of the virus among residents and visitors alike.

VISITOR PRECAUTIONS

  • Wash your hands thoroughly. There are hand-washing stations throughout the facility
  • Report to the unit nurse if you’re visiting a resident who has contracted the virus
  • Masks, gowns and gloves are recommended when visiting an infected resident, to prevent spreading the virus further or contracting it yourself
