ROOF COLLAPSE LIKE IN ELLIOT LAKE UNLIKELY IN TIMMINS

UPDATED to remove the reference to a hockey arena.  My Timmins Now Dot Com apologizes for the error.

Something like a roof collapse in Elliot Lake last week isn’t very likely in city of Timmins owned facilities.

Snow is blamed for the collapse of the roof on an Elliot Lake facility that includes an auditorium.

Glenn Thurston is the manager of parks, recreation and building maintenance in Timmins.  He says the local buildings all meet building code requirements for snow load.

“Technically, we should be good,” he states confidently. “But on the other hand, we have been removing snow as we go along where we can on these roofs.”

Thurston points out the one big difference between Timmins and Elliot Lake.

“(The Elliot Lake building) was formerly a hotel with a flat roof, I believe.  And most of our roofs here are sloped, which is why we really do keep an eye on entrances and all the snow that we have on the flat areas.”

Snow slides off sloped roofs.
