IT’S BEEN TOO COLD FOR DOWNHILL SKIING AT KAMISKOTIA

Lots of snow is good for a ski hill like Kamiskotia.  But the general manager out there, Eric Philpow, says the extreme cold we’ve been experiencing isn’t.

Philpow says Kamiskotia couldn’t even open two weekends ago. Weather conditions made it too dangerous.

This weekend promises to be a good one, with the thermometer possibly hitting -5C on Sunday.

“We’re looking forward to it, full operation,” says Philpow. “We’re ready for everybody to come out and enjoy the snow, because we do have a ton of snow this year, we just need that weather for people to enjoy it.”

Even with all that snow, it’s been too cold.  Philpow says the snow is too dry because of it, so there’s no friction.

“The way skis work is you need a layer of moisture between the snow and the ski.,” he explains.  “And so when it’s so dry, there’s no moisture in it, so it’s basically like velcro: it just sticks to the base, as opposed to gliding on it.”
