NEWLY FORMED GROUP AIMS TO TAKE OVER HOLLINGER SKATING OVAL

A new, non-profit organization dedicated to recreation opportunities in Timmins tells city council that its main goal is assuming the old Sk8te Hollinger oval, under the new name “Hollinger Skateway”.

Directors of the Timmins Community Park Association asked council Tuesday night only for support to use the Hollinger and other parks for its year-round activities.

Director Mark Rogers said that grew out of the loss of the skating oval.

“With talk in the media about no skating oval in the city,” said Rogers, “we wanted to make city council and the people of the City of Timmins aware there is a committee and it is working towards a unified goal.”

Director Reilly Heffernan told council that the sky’s the limit, with its help.

“It bodes well that we’re not asking for cash from the city,” he stated, “but we’re just asking for support, and in return, we’ll give back to the community that supports us.”

The committee met with nods of approval from all members of council.
