VANDALS BREAK LIGHTS ON GILLIES LAKE BOARDWALK

“Why” is anyone’s guess.  Over the weekend, someone broke all 17 lights on the Gillies Lake boardwalk.

Ward 1 Councillor Rock Whissell represents the city on the Mattagami Region Conservation Authority, which he says worked hard to light up the trail around the lake.

“Some people took it upon themselves to damage the beautiful work that the MRCA had done throughout the years.”

A frustrated Councillor Whissell hopes that anyone who witnessed this act of vandalism – or any other – calls city police or Crime Stoppers.

“We have to look out for what’s nice in the city,” he says. “ I mean people work hard to beautify the city.  We’re working hard to keep our tax dollars down and make beautiful arrangements throughout the city, and it’s unfortunate that there’s people that don’t respect that.”

The damage estimate on the broken lights is in the neighbourhood of ten-thousand dollars.
