HUMANE SOCIETY TRYING TO BOOST PET ADOPTIONS AT CHRISTMAS

A lot of families welcome new, four-legged, furry members at Christmas time.

That’s great, according to the Timmins and District Humane Society, especially if the pets are adopted from the local shelter.

“It’s a time of year that we really try to boost those pet adoption numbers, to get our homeless animals into homes for the holidays,” according to executive director Alicia Santamaria

However, she’s quick to point out that pet ownership is a lifelong commitment.

“What are you going to be doing in the next 10, 15, potentially 20 years,” she asks, “and do you see a pet with you for that amount of time?”

Santamaria adds that there is also the financial commitment to consider.  It costs money for veterinary care, food, bedding, grooming and other pet needs.
